The Triton: Queer Feminist Sailing Project

The ocean has always been a symbol of freedom and adventure, and the project Triton is a sailboat that promotes inclusivity and empowerment. Established in 2022, Triton is an adventure for individuals who identify as queer, feminist, trans, non-binary, and neurodivergent. Triton offers more than just a voyage; it's a platform for fostering connections, challenging societal norms, and redefining community on the high seas.

Triton's mission is centered around providing a secure and welcoming environment for individuals who are frequently subjected to discrimination and exclusion in traditional sailing settings. The founders of the project envisioned a space where marginalized communities could not only savor the excitement of sailing but also discover comfort and camaraderie among fellow individuals who share similar experiences and beliefs.

The crew of Triton comes from diverse backgrounds, representing a wide range of identities and experiences. Each member is encouraged to fully participate and share responsibilities, from planning routes to mastering sailing techniques. The sailing vessel, Triton, not only serves as a home but also facilitates transformative experiences.

Life on Triton offers a unique combination of adventure, companionship, and self-exploration. The intimate setting of this place allows a maximum of five individuals, including the crew, to foster close relationships and meaningful interactions. Crew members participate in a range of activities, from navigating the open waters to repairing sails and motors.

Preparing vegan meals together is a collaborative effort that promotes sustainability and inclusivity. On Triton, crew members take turns cooking in the galley, creating healthy and delicious meals while bonding over shared culinary experiences. When not performing sailing duties, downtime on the boat allows for relaxation and reflection, whether it be reading a good book, playing board games, or simply enjoying the peacefulness of the sea.

They have introduced a sliding scale for contributions to ensure that people from different financial backgrounds can participate. The contributions include a one-time security fee, a weekly stay contribution and shared expenses. These contributions cover the basic costs of boat maintenance and provisions. Triton's sponsorship program and flexible contribution options aim to remove financial barriers and welcome all to sailing adventures.

As Triton sails its way across the ocean, it represents much more than just a voyage; it is a tribute to the strength of community, perseverance, and united efforts. By establishing an environment where dissimilarities are embraced and impediments are eliminated, Triton embodies the essence of inclusivity and encouragement. As the project progresses and expands, it reminds us that the sea is accessible to everyone. Together, we can steer towards a future that is more inclusive and fair.
