The Green Corner Serves a Cocktail of Inclusivity and Sustainability

In the heart of Aarau, The Green Corner stands as a welcoming space created for the queer community, now marking its fifth month in our BØWIE Incubator program. This unique establishment, blending a coffee shop and plant nursery, is passionately run by Ely and Oxana. We had the chance to meet with them to talk about their project, discussing not only the successes they've enjoyed but also the challenges they've encountered throughout their journey...

The essence of Green Corner lies in its dual purpose: a sanctuary for marginalized people and a hub for plant lovers. It offers a range of indoor plants, with expert advice to ensure their longevity, promoting a deeper connection between humans and nature. The space also houses a vegan café, where visitors can relax amidst lush greenery. This combination of plant care and veganism encapsulates a holistic approach to wellness and environmental stewardship.

Oxana has been reflecting on the profound impact of Green Corner on the lives of individuals and the community for 4 years now. It is a place where people can come together, not feel alone, and engage in meaningful dialogues, fostering a sense of belonging and purpose. However, the journey is not without its challenges. Operating on a not-for-profit basis, financial constraints are a constant obstacle as the team strives to keep the space accessible while juggling their other jobs in a capitalist society. In terms of community support, Oxana encourages diverse forms of contribution, be it through purchasing plants and vegan treats, using or renting the space, or monetary donations. Highlighting the café's offerings, from ethically sourced coffee to a variety of vegan baked goods, Green Corner invites everyone to partake in their sustainable and inclusive vision.

Oxana shares the motivation behind Green Corner: an urgent need for spaces that merge queer, feminist, and anarchist values, particularly in more rural areas lacking such community shelters. This initiative stems from Oxana's own experiences facing the challenges of being queer in a predominantly rural township. The creation of Green Corner is the culmination of personal struggle, privilege, and an unwavering commitment to fostering a sense of belonging and community.
