‘Diva’, the 33 Meters Vulva Sculpture by Brazilian Artist Juliana Notari

Tired of living in a phallocentric world, Juliana Notari decided to take the matter into her own hands. Her giant vulva sculpture made the headlines in December 2020, when it was finally revealed after eleven months of hard work.

Twenty men worked on this magnificent piece of land art that sits upon a hill in Usina del Arte, an art park in Brazil.

The sculpture, titled ‘Diva’, is 33 meters long, 16 meters wide and 6 meters deep. Juliana says she wanted to ‘question the relationship between nature and culture in our
phallocentric and anthropocentric western society’.

Her work has sparked some controversy; the artist has been harassed by the far-right wing, receiving countless sexist comments. Some trans people have also pointed out that her vulva sculpture is quite excluding, equating femininity with the vulva.

Juliana Notari is a visual artist based in Brazil. She is known for her performances, including her 2006 ‘Dra. Diva’ performance, involving a speculum, a hammer, rock chisel and gloves. She received the Funarte Prize for women in visual arts in 2013.
