Being a Trans Woman in Uganda: Watch ‘The Pearl of Africa’
‘The Pearl of Africa’ is a documentary directed by Jonny von Wallström that tells the compelling story of Cleopatra Kambugu, a trans woman from Uganda.
As the anti-gay law passes in Uganda, Cleopatra is cruelly outed on the cover of a tabloid and has to flee her home country. However, the film mostly focuses on the relationship between Cleopatra and her long-time partner, Nelson: a romance that will make you believe in true love. Shots of the beautiful scenery and intimate close-ups create an almost poetic vibe.
Available as a web series on Youtube or on Netflix, the documentary is a rare example of African LGBTQIA+ filmmaking. Definitely worth a watch!
